Ascent Aid Nepal has been instrumental in transforming educational access in rural Nepal, particularly through its dedicated support for Shree Janata Basic School in Patle, Okhaldhunga.
One of the most significant milestones in this partnership is the construction and operation of a school hostel. This facility serves as a vital resource for the community, addressing several critical challenges:
The School Hostel Project
Infrastructure: Ascent Aid Nepal constructed a dedicated hostel building to provide a safe and stable living environment for students and staff.
Capacity: The hostel currently accommodates approximately 50 students and 4 teachers, along with essential support staff, including a cook and a hostel helper.
Comprehensive Care: Beyond just a roof, the project ensures that residents receive regular meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) prepared in the school’s kitchen. This is supported by on-site greenhouses that grow fresh food to sustain the children and staff.
Safety and Access: In the remote Patle region, many students previously faced 2–3 hour commutes on foot each way. The hostel eliminates these dangerous journeys, which are particularly hazardous during the monsoon season due to high river levels and increased wildlife activity.
Broader Impact at Shree Janata Basic School
The hostel is part of a decade-long commitment to the school, which was rebuilt by Ascent Aid Nepal following the devastating 2015 earthquake. Other key contributions include:
Academic Expansion: Supporting the school’s growth from a primary level to offering classes up to Grade 8.
Employment: Funding the salaries of several teachers to ensure a consistent and quality education for the roughly 100 children enrolled at the school.
Holistic Development: The construction of modern classrooms, study rooms, a canteen, a playground, and improved sanitation facilities (toilets).
By providing a home away from home, Ascent Aid Nepal ensures that distance and poverty are no longer barriers to education, allowing students to focus entirely on their studies and a brighter future.
